Tuesday was a great day at Camp Tallowood.  We had another awesome day of rec, tribal time, and lots of really good food.  During our morning worship time, our pastor, Dr. Brooks, spoke on Elijah and Elisha.  Its always awesome to see our pastor come to camp with us and share this time in the lives of our students.

We had a packed afternoon that included a paintball war between the youth staff and some of our junior girls that won the Camp Tallowood YouTube Challenge – check out one of our previous posts to see their video.  Sadly despite all my trashtalk, I got annihilated by these girls once we actually got to play the game.  It was a humbling experience but they did a good job of taking it to me, Jerome, Rebecca, Carl, Peter, Claire, and Joel.

After paintball, we headed out to the softball field for our annual Saints and Sinners softball game between the Tallowood Seniors and the Camp Tallowood sponsors.  This has proven to be a heated battle the past few years but this year it was a one-sided victory for the sponsors.  Final score: Sponsors 18, Seniors 3.

We ended the night with worship (with another great message from Scot Pollok) and the  Tribal Shout: Voice of the Prophets where each tribe presents a two minute sketch depicting their assigned prophet from the Old Testament period we are studying.  We had some amazing presentations from our students!  I love seeing the creativity of our students on display.  Now, its late and I can’t believe I’m still up.  I’m ready for Wednesday.  Lights Out!

Camp Tallowood, Post 1

We’re already two days into camp and everything is going well.  Our seniors arrived on Saturday and helped prepare for our rec games and set up the pavilion for worship.  They did a great job and all their work has made camp run so smoothly.

Our camp pastor Scot Pollok has done an awesome job teaching us about our theme this year as we study the period of the Old Testament from Solomon to the end of the exile.  We’ve also been led in worship by our very own Dave and Jess Ray and the Tallowood Players.  It’s been great!

Our week of camp began Sunday night when all the buses arrived and we went down by the river for a luau and lots of amazing food prepared for us by the Camp Eagle staff.    Then we had worship and a tribal discovery activity where all our students found out what group they would be with for the week.

Monday was a packed day!  We started with worship and then our tribes went out to their sites where they began work building their tribal wall of defense, studying their scripture memory verses and learning about the history of their tribe.  After their tribal time, we had lunch and then recreation.  After a few hours of organized rec, all of camp went out to play Acquire the Tire.  This is an amazing game where students compete to grab the most tires.  The real fun comes in when we pour all kinds of food on the tires.  Today students grabbed tires that were covered with stuff like grape jelly, honey, maple syrup, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, salsa, shampoo, chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, cheese puffs, thousand island, ranch dressing, and pickle relish to name a few.  It was amazing!

After some free time, we had dinner and worship.  It has been an awesome day and I can’t wait for tomorrow.  It should be another busy day at camp!  Now… lights out!

Pics are coming soon!

As we finish up with the final preparations for Camp Tallowood, I can’t help but get excited about all of amazing things God has in store for us during the next week! Although there are what feels like a million tiny details still to be taken care of between now and Sunday, the student ministry offices are buzzing with anticipation.

At “Campfire” yesterday, our student interns helped first time campers prepare with a few tips. It was a great time getting ready for an awesome week.

Camp Rules Video 09

Well, its that time of year… Summertime!  And with summer come many things including Camp Tallowood!  One of my favorite things to do as a member of the youth staff is making the annual camp rules video.  This video is shown on all the buses as they head out to Camp Eagle.  Its a long ride to camp (about 5 hours) but this usually helps pass a little bit of the time.

We’ve done a lot of fun videos in the past that usually are a take off of a movie or TV show.  Some of the ones I’ve made were based on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Real World, American Idol, and The Office – last year’s rules video can be seen here.  Anyway, back to this year.  We had a blast shooting on Tuesday and I think it is going to be an amazing video.  So, just to give you a peak, here are a few pics from our shoot the other day.  Can you guess what movie we’re basing it on this year?

Whew!  We have finally caught up on our sleep and are back at work getting ready for camp.  But before we move forward, let’s look back at a great weekend!

Group3

We had an amazing time at our Middle School Lock-In with 153 students, 12 high school sponsors and 25 adult sponsors going all around Houston enjoying some pretty awesome places!  After a few hours at the Xchange, we enjoyed a late dinner at CiCi’s Pizza, jumping on inflatables at Pump It Up, and bowling, playing laser tag, dominating video games, and playing pool at Times Square.  And did I mention the ice cream sundaes at 3 am?  Those were awesome!

Thanks to all those that came and to the amazing adults that help make a night like that possible.  Y’all rock!

Here are a few pictures, but click here for a few hundred more!

Camp Eagle Trip

About two weeks ago, our youth staff and a few others took a journey to Camp Eagle where we have Camp Tallowood.  It was a pretty awesome trip so I thought I’d share some of our journey.

We started out heading north towards Austin, instead of heading west towards San Antonio like normal.  The reason for this was that we needed to pick up some cedar staffs that are carried by our seniors each year at camp.  We weren’t able to find a place that sold exactly what we were looking for near Houston, so we had to make the journey to Lampasas so we could go to Myers Cedar Yard.

Once we were there, we were able to load up 100 Senior Staffs.  This should get us through about 3 years of camp.

Jensen found one he liked… it is a little big though!

After we picked up the staffs, we asked the guys at the cedar yard to recommend a good place to stop for lunch.  They didn’t lead us astray.  We made a stop at The Yumm Factory Cafe.  They had a lunch buffet that was amazing!  We had fried pork chops, beef tips, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, and chocolate cake.  It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had.  Good place.  If you’re ever in Lampasas, I highly recommend it.

After this we began our drive to Camp Eagle which was about 3 1/2 hours away.  Being from Louisiana, and not getting out to explore much of Texas, I was amazed at the beauty of this state.  Lots of nice scenery and flowers everywhere.  Along the way we passed through Johnson City, the birthplace of President Lyndon Johnson, and we even stopped to smell the roses in Fredericksburg.  This was a cozy little town with a lot of festivities going on.  Wish we could have stayed longer.

After a quick stop at the Dairy Queen in Kerrville, we continued on our way to Camp Eagle.  But we weren’t quite done with stops yet.  On the way down Hwy 83, we stopped at the Legendary YO Ranch and the epic Garven’s Store – the gas station near camp that sells all kinds of jerky, biker clothing, and even huge chunks of unrefrigerated cheese.  Good times!

Eventually, we made it to Camp Eagle and it was gorgeous.  They’ve done a ton of work recently including repainting their buildings and adding some stone to all of them as well.  They have even made some improvements to the pavilion where we have worship.  They are also building a few new cabins and a huge new duel water slide.  Can’t wait for that!

camp-lead-team-2009-043This is where the new 150 foot water slide will be.  That’s a long way down!

We had a great dinner with some of the staff that night and we were able to meet with Chris, their summer camp director, about all kinds of things that will be happening at Camp Tallowood this year.  I don’t think I can say much more except that we scouted out some new locations for a few tribes, drove up to the windmill, and even found where the Senior Celebration will be this year.  It is gonna be awesome!

After all that, we headed back home to Houston.  We went out the back way (which I didn’t even know existed) and had an amazing drive through more beautiful hill country.  On the way out we saw some weird stuff though.  Apparently, some people have ranches with giraffes and kangaroos.  Crazy!  Anyway, we made less stops on the way back, and one is worth some explanation.  And no its not Buc-ees, though we did stop there for some Beaver Nuggets and Dr Pepper Icees!

We made a stop in Uvalde at Rexall Drugs.  We weren’t in need of aspirin from being in the car so much, we were actually looking for a good place for lunch.  We saw on a sign outside of the store that they served food, so Jerome sent me in to scope the place out.  What I found was incredible!  They had a fully operational, old school soda fountain and lunch counter.  So of course, we went in and had a delicious meal.  Burgers, shakes, and mexican food.  What a combo!

After all these adventures, we made it home and I’m more excited than ever for this year’s camp.  Be sure and sign up if you haven’t yet.  It is gonna be amazing!

Our Middle School Choir, Heartlight, had a great trip to San Antonio this past weekend.  We went to Fiesta, Texas on Saturday and then sang at Woodland Baptist Church on Sunday morning.  It was an awesome weekend with students.  You can check out some of the pictures from the weekend here.
